Make Up Days for Emergency School Closures

March 30th, 2010 | By Joaquin

To date our district ha missed seven school days due to inclument weather issues (February 10, 11, 26; March 16, 17, 18 & 19). Additionally, in response to the progressive storm advisories for the area on February 25, 2010, students were released at 11:00am, which is less than the required four hours of classroom instructional time that constitutes a full school day. Although emergency school closures have been higherthan norma this year, we are still mandated by the New Jersey Department of Education to provide classroom instruction for 180 days and we will need to make up at least seven, possibly as many as eight school days. In reviewing our calendar, I exaamined available options for making up days. One of my major concerns is the administration of NJASK which i occurring in late April and Early May. Also consideration is the fact that many families (students and staff) have plan during spring break week that will take them away from the city. As a result, I have decided to:

1) Utilize the two days built in our calendar which in effect reduces the 182 days to 180

2) Utilize two days in June (i.e. 23 and 24)

3) Utilize three Saturdays between April 1 and May 1 (April 17, 24 and May 1)

4) Ask forgiveness for February 25, 2010, the day we released students at 11:00am, as we were in session for part of the day and closed due to the progression of a severe snow storm

The Saturday being utilized are, in part, an attempt to providde additional instructional time in preparation for the administration of NJASK

On Wednesday, March 24, 2010, I shared with the Board od Education our plans for making up the school closure days. Since that time, issues have been raised concerning those whose worship days are Saturday, as well as, staff and parents who may have had plans. After surveying representatives from Faih-Based Groups, staff and the District-Wide Parent Organization Leaders, we have decided to hold with this initial decision.

Schools will be in session beginning at the normal start times and all schools will be dismissed at 1:10pm Attendance is required on all of the dates, however, if attendance to schoolon Saturdays is prohibited due to religious reasons, students will be marked absent and families should provide written notification to the school administration verifying that as the reason for absence.

Fan of Yesterdays or Todays Music?

February 3rd, 2010 | By Joaquin

music-notes As we enter the year 2010, we have seen the obvious change on what music is and what it used to be. So many singles and calloborations that you can't seem to know who's song it actually belongs to, or on who's album it might show up. Speaking of albums before you brought albums, now you just down load them, most of the for free from some internet site. Downloading has hurt the music industries way to monitor who's seeling what (soundscan), chart ratings (billboards) and above all mnies such as royalty. Its a double edge sword, on one hand if your on a budget and are a upcoming artist you can "leak" your own music into the web and quickly grow a fan base without ever performing on a stage. This causes alot of artist to self manage and create more independent lables. The other side of it is for the already known artist, it takes double the effort to go platinum (selling 1 million copies -albums) and earning that prestigious platinum plaque. At the end of the day, it seems that its as easy as just having great music that might not last around for the next 10 years, but for the next 10 minutes. On a weekly basis, new hits come about and the process of winning an award can be as simple as a voting process. I wonder if we have traded quantity over quality, whether Michael Jackon,Madonna,Stevie B, Lil Wayne, Drake or Beyonce only time will tell.

Dancing adds years to your life

January 26th, 2010 | By Joaquin

If you haven't been getting much exercise lately, dancing is a fun way to increase your activity level. Even if you have to rest frequently, dancing can help improve your health. Start with slower dances, and work your way up to the more vigorous moves. The more you practice, the longer and more vigorously you'll be able to dance. Energetic dancing can give you all the benefits of aerobic exercise. It raises your heart rate and increases your oxygen intake as you move the large muscles of your body. Dancing burns calories, helps strengthen your heart and bones, and tones your muscles. It can also help you maintain your balance and increase your strength, endurance and flexibility. And the more time you spend dancing, the greater the effect on your health. Dancing energetically for half an hour is comparable to cycling five miles in the same time period. Unlike traditional exercises where your body expects certain things to happen, couple dancing challenges your muscles and mind by "surprising" them with often times unexpected movement. Dancing can also be a boon to your social life. Take a dance class or join a dance group. It will give you a chance to interact with new people, build friendships and maybe even renew or start a romance. And above all, dancing can and will add up to 10 years to your life.
